Ian Goodman

Ian has practiced intellectual property law for his entire career and is excited to help you protect your intellectual property in Canada and around the world.


Ian is a registered patent agent in Canada and a registered patent agent in the United States (for Canadian resident applicants). Ian has worked in a number of technology fields, such as life sciences and therapeutics, chemicals, and mechanical and chemical engineering. In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, he provides patentability, freedom to practice, infringement and validity opinions, as well as conducts IP due diligence in commercial transactions.

Ian also files and prosecutes industrial design registration applications in Canada.


Ian is a registered trademark agent in Canada and can assist you in protecting your brand in Canada and globally. Ian files and prosecutes trademark applications as well as providing registrability, clearance, and infringement opinions.

Ian was awarded the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada’s Education Foundation Prize for obtaining the top mark in the 2011 Canadian Trademark Agent Examination.

Legal Education and Awards

Prior to be called to the Bar of Ontario, Ian concurrently obtained a Canadian law degree from the University of Windsor and an American law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy. Ian received the E. Bruce Leonard Prize in Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law from the University of Windsor.

Pre-Law Education and Employment

Ian graduated from The University of British Columbia with a degree in biology (specializing in cell biology and genetics). After graduating and before law school, Ian worked as a technician at the UBC Bioimaging Facility.

Past Legal Employment

Ian has worked at a boutique intellectual property firm in Ottawa (Aventum IP Law LLP), a prominent full-service law firm (Stikeman Elliott LLP), and a prominent global intellectual property firm (Marks & Clerk).
