Orin Del Vecchio

Overview

Orin Del Vecchio practices in all areas of intellectual property law, with a focus on patent drafting and prosecution, particularly in the areas of financial services and emerging technologies.

Patents and Designs

Orin is a registered patent agent in Canada and the United States (for Canadian residents). He has drafted and obtained patents for clients and associates in a variety of fields, including computer hardware and software, electrical, mechanical, chemical and applied physics. Orin also supervises the filing and prosecution of patent applications in other jurisdictions, both directly and through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) process.

Orin also provides patentability, freedom to practice, infringement and validity opinions.

Orin has also drafted and obtained industrial design registrations and design patents for clients in respect of a variety of articles in Canada, the United States and other jurisdictions.

Past Legal Employment

Orin was formerly in-house patent counsel for a major financial institution (TD Bank). In this role, he worked extensively on the business aspects of intellectual property law, including portfolio management, internal processes, and acquisition and licensing strategies. Additionally, Orin worked directly with innovation and new product teams, and is a named inventor on numerous patents and patent applications. Prior to that role, he spent eight years in private practice at firms in Toronto (Lang Michener LLP) and Vancouver (Vermette Law) as well as working as a sole practitioner.

Legal Education

Prior to being called to the Bar of Ontario in 2005, Orin was originally called to the Bar of British Columbia in 2000 after obtaining his law degree from the University of Victoria.

Pre-Law Education

Before law school, Orin graduated with a combined honours degree in Physics and Chemistry from the University of British Columbia.
