Overview
Tapas Pain is a partner at Heer Law whose practice includes patents, trademarks, industrial designs, trade secrets, intellectual property strategy, and portfolio management.
Education
Tapas earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Toxicology and Pharmacology and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Pharmacy from the University of Toronto before attending law school at the University of Ottawa.
He has co-authored peer-reviewed medical science publications, including a landmark paper supporting standardized reporting practices that has been cited by more than fifty peer-reviewed publications, including the BRIVAC, CONSORT, PetSORT, PRISMA, and STROBE guidelines.
Qualifications
Tapas was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2000 and has been a registered trademark agent since 2002 and a registered patent agent since 2004.
Experience
Prior to joining Heer Law, he was the founder and continuous owner of a full-service intellectual property law firm in York Region.
Over more than two decades of practice, he has advised clients across six continents in connection with domestic and international intellectual property matters involving technologies and industries including large-scale infrastructure, building and construction, mining, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, commercial manufacturing methods, residential and industrial fixtures and devices, and chemical systems and recovery methods.
Tapas has significant experience prosecuting patent applications in Canada and internationally, particularly Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications.
His practice includes PCT Chapter II international prosecution, as well as national phase entry strategy and prosecution across multiple jurisdictions.
Community Involvement
Before entering private practice, he trained in the armed forces for six years and at the Royal Conservatory of Music for ten years.
Outside the practice of law, he maintains strong interests in faith-based living, physical fitness, music, computer programming, reading, ancient history, mentorship, cooking, and classical written communication, including reading and writing in cursive script.
Tapas is also active in outdoor preparedness, food production, wildlife habitat conservation, and is a licensed hunter in Alberta and both a licensed hunter and trapper in Ontario.
