Valeen Sodhi

Summer Student

Overview

Valeen is a summer student at Heer Law with a background in Computer Science and a strong interest in intellectual property. She is particularly interested in how intellectual property supports business growth and understands how rapidly evolving technologies affect clients, from shaping their business strategies to exposing them to new legal risks. She recognizes the importance of providing clear and practical legal guidance to help clients navigate these challenges.

Prior to law school, she has worked closely with businesses in a client-facing role, supporting branding and design needs through graphic design and commercial printing. Through this experience, she developed an understanding of the practical realities businesses face. This perspective shaped her appreciation for how intellectual property must be tailored to meet both the ambitions and the practical realities of a business.

Legal Education

Valeen is currently pursuing her JD at the University of Ottawa. During her legal studies, she has focused on law and technology courses, with a special interest in intellectual property.

She has been actively involved in competitive mooting and having been selected as a Writing Leader, she mentors law students in developing strong professional legal writing skills. Valeen also serves as the 2L Representative for the Law and Technology Student Society where she supports outreach initiatives and helps connect students with emerging issues at the intersection of law and technology, including AI, privacy and data governance through various events organized throughout the school year.

Pre-Law Education

Valeen graduated with Distinction with a degree in Computer Science where she majored in Computer Applications with a minor in Law and Society from Concordia University in Montreal. Her academic background provided her with a strong foundation in technology and systems thinking, which continues to shape her interest in the intersection of law, innovation, and emerging technologies.
