Christopher Heer
Christopher Heer is the Founder and Principal of Heer Law, a full-service intellectual property firm based in Toronto. With over two decades of experience, Christopher’s practice is devoted primarily to patent and design patent prosecution and litigation, representing approximately 85% of his work.
Recognized for his depth of expertise, Christopher is one of only 15 lawyers designated by the Law Society of Ontario as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property Law (Patent). He is also a registered patent agent in both Canada and the United States (for Canadian resident applicants) and a registered trademark agent in Canada and the U.S.
With a technical background in computer engineering and a law degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Christopher brings a unique combination of legal acumen and technological insight to his clients.
He has extensive experience obtaining patents across a broad range of industries, including computer software and hardware, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and biotechnology fields, as well as design patents and industrial designs in Canada, the U.S., and abroad.
Beyond patent drafting and prosecution, Christopher provides clients with patentability, freedom to operate, infringement, and validity opinions, and conducts intellectual property due diligence in complex commercial transactions.
Over his career, Christopher has represented some of the world’s leading technology companies, and in recent years, he has become widely recognized as one of Canada’s most experienced patent agents in artificial intelligence technologies.
Before founding Heer Law in 2014, Christopher practiced with Bennett Jones LLP and Dimock Stratton LLP (now part of DLA Piper). Today, he continues to lead Heer Law with a commitment to helping innovators, creators, and businesses protect and leverage their intellectual property to achieve commercial success.
